Pfaffenthal

The tiny working-class village in the Alzette valley — panoramic lift, the Vauban towers, and the Pescatore park just above. Pfaffenthal is a narrow strip of houses along the Alzette below the Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte (the big red bridge). Historically it was where the tanners, brewers and washerwomen lived — outside the fortress walls, cheap and stinky. Now it's quiet, faintly gentrifying, and mostly famous for the free glass elevator that drops from Plateau du Saint-Esprit into the valley in 30 seconds. There's also a functioning funicular from the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg train station up to the Kirchberg plateau. You come here to look at fortifications, not to eat or shop. The Fort Vauban ruins, the Trois Glands towers up on the ridge, and the walking path along the Alzette toward Clausen are all free and rarely crowded. Two or three small cafés on rue Vauban serve lunch to workers from the nearby ministry buildings. At 9pm it's completely empty. Skip if you want restaurants and shops within 100 meters; stay if you want the quietest bed in central Luxembourg.

Questions, answered

Is Pfaffenthal a good budget base?

Yes — probably the best-value central location. You get free lifts up to both Ville Haute and Kirchberg, you’re on the train line, and hotel prices run USD 20-40 below the plateau. The tradeoff is limited dining; plan to eat elsewhere.

Are the lifts really free and reliable?

Yes to free, mostly yes to reliable. The panoramic lift runs 05:45-01:00 and only goes down for maintenance a few times a year (posted in advance). If it's out, bus 9 does the plateau-to-Pfaffenthal run in about 6 minutes.
