Esch-sur-Alzette

Luxembourg's second city and former steel capital — Belval university campus, industrial heritage, and cheaper hotels than the capital. Esch-sur-Alzette sits 20 minutes south of the capital by train, on the French border. It was the heart of Luxembourg's steel industry from the 1870s to the 1990s, and the transformation of the former ArcelorMittal blast furnaces at Belval into the University of Luxembourg campus is one of the more successful industrial reuse projects in Europe. Rue de l’Alzette is the pedestrian shopping spine through the old town — decent Art Deco frontages, chain stores, some good Portuguese and Italian restaurants.It was European Capital of Culture in 2022, which left behind upgraded museums and a slightly hipper vibe than the city had before. Prices are 30-40% below the capital for hotels and dinner, trains to Luxembourg Gare are free and take 20-25 minutes every 15 minutes at peak times.
