Grund

The riverside village 70 meters below the old town — stone bridges, the Neumünster abbey, and the only late-night bars in the capital. Grund is what you see from the Corniche: red-roofed cottages along the Alzette, the Neumünster abbey converted into a cultural center, and the Saint John's church with the Black Madonna. It's technically a neighborhood of Luxembourg City but feels like a separate village stuffed into a canyon. During the day it's quiet — a few tourists, joggers, dog walkers. At night the four or five pubs on rue Münster fill up and it becomes the closest thing Luxembourg has to a nightlife strip.Skip Grund if you don’t want to climb. The panoramic lift from Pfaffenthal and the free elevator from Plateau du Saint-Esprit help, but you’ll still walk stairs. Stay here if you want quiet mornings by the water and don’t mind a 10-minute climb to reach the center. Scott's Pub, Liquid, and the Melusina club below the cliff on rue de la Tour Jacob are the usual Friday-night circuit, closing between 1am and 3am.

Questions, answered

Is Grund safe at night?

Yes, very. It's the busiest bar strip in Luxembourg but the crowd is mostly bank workers and EU staff. The path back up via Montée du Grund is well-lit and CCTV-covered. The elevator shuts at 01:00 though, so plan accordingly.

Can I park in Grund?

Barely. There's a small paid lot on rue Saint-Ulric and street parking on rue Münster that fills by 09:00. Better to leave the car at Glacis or Bouillon park-and-ride and take bus 23 down.
