Vianden Castle above the Our valley at dusk Vianden Castle above the Our valley at dusk

Ten places to sleep within a 10-minute walk of Luxembourg's most photographed castle, from $65 guesthouses to $220 river-view rooms.

Sleeping in the shadow of the castle

Vianden is a one-street town wrapped around the Our river, with the castle looming above it. Staying overnight is the entire point — day-trippers leave by 6pm and the village turns properly medieval. My top pick is Hotel Heintz on Grand-Rue ($130, family-run since 1929, ask for a room facing the castle). Runner-up: Hotel Belle-Vue ($150, actual balcony views) and Auberge Aal Veinen "Beim Hunn" ($110, best restaurant in town attached).

Budget and mid-range

Hotel Petry ($95) is the workhorse — clean, central, no view but two minutes from the chairlift. Hotel Oranienburg ($140) is smarter with a decent spa. For under $75, the Vianden youth hostel occupies a proper stone building on the river, dorm beds at $32 and private doubles around $70. Gîte de la Vallée ($85) rents apartments if you want a kitchen. Skip the two big roadside hotels north of town — they save you $20 but you’ll spend it on taxis.

The castle-view premium

Rooms with a direct castle view cost roughly $40-60 more than street-facing rooms in the same hotel. It's worth it once — waking up to that silhouette through the mist is why you came. Book the June-September window at least six weeks ahead; the medieval festival in early August sells the entire town out.

Before you book

The questions people ask about Vianden, answered with this month’s numbers.

How long do I need in Vianden?

One night minimum. The castle deserves 3 hours, the chairlift and Our valley walk another 2, and dinner in the village is a highlight.

Is there parking at hotels?

Most Vianden hotels have small free lots or arrangements with the municipal car park at the bottom of town ($5 a day).
