Kirchberg

The plateau of EU institutions, banks and the Philharmonie — glass towers, the tram spine, and Luxembourg's biggest shopping mall. Kirchberg is the flat plateau northeast of the old town where the Grand Duchess Charlotte bridge lands. In the 1960s it was farmland; today it holds the European Court of Justice, the European Investment Bank, the Philharmonie concert hall, Mudam contemporary art museum, and the Auchan Kirchberg shopping center — the biggest in the country. The T1 tram runs the entire spine from Luxexpo down to the airport, and everything of interest is within 300 meters of a stop.It suits business travelers, families visiting the Coque sports center, and anyone with a concert at the Philharmonie. Skip it if you want atmosphere, old buildings, or nightlife — after 19:00 outside the shopping center, Kirchberg is genuinely deserted, and Sundays even the mall closes. The upside: hotels are newer, bigger and often cheaper on weekends than the equivalent in Ville Haute, because their weekday clientele is EU staff and bankers who go home Friday afternoon.

Is Kirchberg boring at night?

Yes. Outside the Philharmonie on concert nights and one or two hotel bars, there's nothing open past 22:00. Locals go to Grund or Clausen for evenings out. If you want walking-distance nightlife, do not stay in Kirchberg.

How long does the tram actually take to the old town?

12 minutes from Philharmonie stop to Hamilius, running every 6 minutes. It's free. Faster and more reliable than driving, and you skip the parking problem entirely.
