Getting there

Take the train from Luxembourg Gare to Ettelbruck (35 minutes), then bus 570 to Vianden (25 minutes, hourly). Both are free with no ticket. The bus drops you at the foot of the village on Rue Victor Hugo. First train leaves around 05:30 and the last useful return is 21:00 — plenty of margin for a leisurely day.

The castle

Vianden Castle sits 300 feet above the Our river and dates to the 11th century. Entry is $12, open 10:00-18:00 April to September, shorter hours in winter. Allow two hours for the great hall, chapel and casemates. English audio guide included. Skip the tourist train that shuttles up from the village — the 15-minute climb through cobbled Grand Rue is the point of coming.

The chairlift and the walk

After the castle, cross the Our and ride the télésiège chairlift ($6 return) to a platform 1,400 feet up. This is the classic postcard view back onto the castle. Descend on foot via the trail through the woods rather than the lift — it takes 40 minutes and passes the ruined Belvedere. Back in the village, walk along the river past the Victor Hugo Museum ($5), where the French novelist stayed in 1871.

Where to eat

Auberge Aal Veinen (also called Beim Hunn) on Grand Rue serves the national dish judd mat gaardebounen — smoked pork neck with broad beans — for $22. For something lighter, Café-Restaurant du Château at the castle gate does a plate of Ardennes charcuterie for $16. Ice cream from Konditorei Sonja at the bridge for $4. Skip the tourist restaurants at the top of the village; they’re overpriced and the views are worse than from the trail.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before they set off on this one.

How much time do I need in Vianden?

Six to seven hours door to door from the capital covers the castle, chairlift, lunch and a river walk without rushing.

Is Vianden Castle worth $12?

Yes, it's one of the largest and best-restored medieval castles in Western Europe, more interesting inside than the exterior suggests.

Can I combine Vianden with another castle?

Bourscheid is reachable by a change of bus in Ettelbruck but makes for a rushed day. Better to do each on its own.

Is Vianden good in winter?

The castle stays open with reduced hours and the village is quieter and cheaper. The chairlift closes November to March.
