Luxembourg in 3 days on a budget
With free public transport nationwide and a handful of $30 hostel beds, Luxembourg is much cheaper than its GDP suggests. Three days for under $250 including sleep is realistic.

Day 1: Free capital
Sleep at the Luxembourg City Youth Hostel in Pfaffenthal (dorm $34, breakfast included). Walk the free ramparts: Corniche, Rue Sigefroi, Bock. Skip the paid casemates and use the Wenzel Circular Walk instead — it's a signposted 3.5-mile loop through 1,000 years of fortifications, entirely free. Lunch at Chiche! on Rue de Strasbourg near the station, a Syrian canteen where a plate is $9. Afternoon: Notre-Dame Cathedral (free) and the free Pfaffenthal panoramic lift. Dinner: kebab and frites in the Gare district for $8.
Day 2: Vianden on the free bus
Ride train to Ettelbruck, connect to bus 570 to Vianden — all free. The castle is $12, the only unavoidable spend. Pack a picnic from the Cactus supermarket next to Luxembourg Gare (bread, cheese, saucisson: $9 for two people) and eat by the Our river. Hike up to the chairlift viewpoint on foot rather than paying $6 for the lift. Return by 19:00 and eat pasta at Come Prima in the Grund, $13 a plate.
Day 3: Mullerthal without a guide
Take bus 110 from the capital to Echternach (free, 50 minutes). Follow Mullerthal Trail signs from the basilica straight into the forest to Schiessentümpel waterfall — 6 miles round trip, no ticket needed. Bring water and shoes with grip. Back in Echternach, coffee and cake at Konditorei Namur for $7. Return to the capital for last-night drinks at Vinoteca on Rue de la Loge, glass of Moselle riesling $6.
