What to expect at Notre-Dame Cathedral of Luxembourg
Consecrated in 1621 as the church of the Jesuit college, Notre-Dame became Luxembourg's cathedral in 1870 and was expanded between 1935 and 1938 with three new spires that give it the distinctive three-tower silhouette on the city skyline. Inside, the late-Gothic vaulting shelters the venerated 17th-century statue of the Consoler of the Afflicted, patron of the city and country, plus the modern royal crypt where the Grand Ducal family is buried behind a bronze door guarded by two lions.
Entry is free and it takes 30-45 minutes to see the nave, the organ loft, the choir with its Renaissance gallery, and the crypt. The best time to visit is the five-week Octave pilgrimage between the third and fifth Sundays after Easter, when the statue is processed through the city and the square outside fills with a food and craft market. Otherwise, mornings before Mass are the quietest and photographs are permitted without flash.

The crypt is closed during services (usually Sat 18:00 and Sun 10:00, 11:30, 18:00). The church itself is open daily except during weddings and state funerals.
No booking needed for individuals. Guided tours can be arranged through the tourist office on Place Guillaume II ($8, 45 min).
Tram T1 to Hamilius, then 4-minute walk down Rue Notre-Dame. Public transport is free nationwide.
