Differdange

The third city and steelworks town on the Belgian border — Fond-de-Gras narrow-gauge railway, Chiers valley walks, cheap stays. Differdange sits on the Belgian and French borders in the southwest corner of Luxembourg, another of the steel-belt towns. Its ArcelorMittal plant still operates (unlike Esch's), which gives the town a working industrial feel rather than a heritage one. The old center around Place des Martyrs and the Château de Differdange has some 19th-century charm, and there's a small university campus. The Fond-de-Gras heritage narrow-gauge railway a few kilometers north is one of Luxembourg's better tourist attractions if you like trains.For most visitors, Differdange is not a destination in itself but a base for exploring the Minett industrial region — Esch, Dudelange, Belval, and the Fond-de-Gras railway all sit within 20 minutes' drive. Hotels are cheap, train access to the capital takes about 35 minutes, and the crowd is genuinely non-touristic. Skip if you want any kind of nightlife or extensive dining — Differdange is quieter than Esch and has less to do.

Should I choose Differdange or Esch?

Esch has more restaurants, more to do in the town center, and better transport. Differdange is cheaper, quieter, closer to the Fond-de-Gras railway, and better if you have a car. First-time visitors should pick Esch.

Is the Fond-de-Gras railway worth the trip?

Yes if you have kids or like industrial heritage. A vintage steam train, a mining train through a former iron ore tunnel, and the Titelberg iron-age hill fort make a solid half-day. Open Sundays and holidays May-September only.
