What to expect at Luxembourg City Fortifications and Old Quarters (UNESCO)

Inscribed by UNESCO in 1994, the Old Quarters and Fortifications wrap the sandstone plateau of Ville Haute in three concentric belts of walls, bastions and casemates carved above the Alzette and Petrusse gorges. What locals call "the most beautiful balcony in Europe" — the Chemin de la Corniche — links the Bock promontory to the Citadel of the Holy Spirit, with drops of nearly 70 metres to the Grund below. It is less a monument than a whole living quarter you walk through for free.

Start on Place de la Constitution for the panorama, drop down the Pfaffenthal lift or the Montée de Clausen, and loop the Wenzel Walk anticlockwise through the Grund. Give it a solid half day if you want to combine the Corniche, the Bock casemates and a coffee in the gorge. Mornings under 10:00 are quiet and photogenic; late afternoon light hits the sandstone perfectly from the Passerelle viaduct.

How much does it cost to visit the Old Quarters?

Walking the fortifications, Corniche and gorge paths is completely free. Only the Bock Casemates and Petrusse Casemates charge admission (around $8-$14).

Are there free hours or days?

The entire outdoor UNESCO zone is free 24/7. The Pfaffenthal panoramic lift is also free of charge.

How long do I need for the walk?

Plan a half day (3-4 hours) for the classic Wenzel loop from Ville Haute down to the Grund, through Clausen and back up via Pfaffenthal.

When is it closed?

Outdoor areas never close. The panoramic lift runs 5:45 to 01:00 daily; the tourist office closes Sundays.

Do I need to book anything?

No booking is needed for the walk itself. Guided Wenzel Walk tours from the tourist office cost about $16 and should be reserved a day ahead in summer.

What is the nearest stop?

Any bus to Hamilius or Badanstalt puts you on Ville Haute; from the station take tram T1 to Hamilius (free public transport nationwide).
