Beaufort actually holds two castles side by side. The medieval castle dates from 1150 and was expanded by the Beaufort, Orley and Beck dynasties into a moated Gothic stronghold before slowly falling into ruin. Next door, in 1649, Governor Johann Baron von Beck built the elegant Renaissance castle that still stands intact — furnished, roofed, and inhabited until 2012. Together they tell the full arc of Luxembourg's feudal architecture.
The medieval castle is self-guided and freely walkable, with dungeons, torture chamber and battlements you can climb. The Renaissance castle can only be visited on a 45-minute guided tour (English at 14:30, French at 15:30) — book at the ticket office. Cap the visit with a $3 tasting of Cassero, the black-currant liqueur invented here in 1928 and still produced on site. Beaufort is also the western gateway to the Mullerthal hiking trails.

When is Beaufort Castle closed?+
The medieval castle closes November through March. The Renaissance castle is by tour only, year-round, weather permitting.
Do I need to book the Renaissance tour?+
Recommended in July-August, when the 14:30 English tour often sells out by noon. Otherwise walk-up is fine.
What is the nearest bus stop?+
Bus 107 from Echternach or 414 from Ettelbruck stops at Beaufort, Rue du Château — a 3-minute walk to the entrance.
