The UNESCO-listed old quarters and fortifications drape Luxembourg City across a sandstone plateau ringed by 17 kilometres of ramparts, gates and gun galleries. Vauban, the Spanish and the Prussians all left their mark before the 1867 Treaty of London forced a partial dismantling. What remains is still one of Europe's most theatrical urban landscapes, with the Grund, Clausen and Pfaffenthal valleys tucked far below the Ville Haute cliffs.
Start at Place de la Constitution, walk the Chemin de la Corniche (billed as Europe's most beautiful balcony), then drop into Grund via the free Pfaffenthal lift. Loop back through the Bock and Wenzel Wall for the classic photo circuit. Wear proper shoes — cobbles and staircases are relentless — and go early morning or after 18:00 for soft light and fewer coach groups.

The outdoor ramparts, Corniche and Pfaffenthal lift are free. Paid sites inside the UNESCO zone are Bock Casemates ($8) and Pétrusse Casemates ($13).
Are there free-entry hours?+
The outdoor UNESCO circuit is free 24/7. Casemate interiors charge year-round with no free days, but under-18s enter free with ID.
How long do I need?+
Allow 3-4 hours for the Corniche, Bock, Wenzel Wall and Pfaffenthal loop. Add 2 hours if you enter both casemates.
When is it closed?+
Outdoor ramparts never close. Casemates shut mid-November to late March and reopen for Easter week.
Do I need to book ahead?+
No booking needed for the outdoor walk. Bock Casemates sells timed tickets online at visitluxembourg.com in July-August to skip queues.
