The Bock is the birthplace of Luxembourg: in 963 AD Count Siegfried traded land with the Abbey of St. Maximin and built a rock castle on this promontory. Over 800 years, Spanish, French and Austrian engineers hollowed the sandstone into a 23-kilometre labyrinth of galleries, powder rooms and cannon loops able to shelter thousands of soldiers, horses and workshops. Even after the 1867 dismantling, 17 kilometres of casemates survived and now form the star of the UNESCO listing.
Enter at Rue Sigefroi next to the ruined Bock tower. The route is a self-guided one-way loop of steep staircases and low headroom — not suitable for prams or mobility issues. Bring a light jacket (11°C year-round) and a phone torch for the darker galleries. Aim for opening or after 17:00 to dodge school groups, and combine with the Wenzel Wall walk directly outside.

The self-guided loop takes 60-90 minutes. Add 30 minutes if you climb to the Dent Creuse viewpoint.
When are the Bock Casemates closed?+
Mid-November to end of March. Also closed 24-25 December and 1 January during the transition weeks.
Do I need to book online?+
Walk-up tickets are fine outside July-August. In summer, book at visitluxembourg.com to skip the 30-minute queue.
What is the nearest bus stop?+
Bus 9 or 23 to Clausen, Fondation Pescatore, then 5 minutes on foot along Rue Sigefroi. Tram stop Hamilius is a 12-minute walk.
