Best sunset spots in Luxembourg

Six viewpoints where the light hits the sandstone cliffs right — from famous balconies to underrated fortress terraces.

5 min read

Chemin de la Corniche

The obvious answer and still the best. The 600-metre balcony walk between Bock and Rham plateaus faces southwest, catching the sun as it drops behind the Bourbon Plateau. Best spot: the bench about halfway along, directly above the Neumünster Abbey. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to secure it, especially May-September. Free, always open.

Pfaffenthal lift platform

The upper platform of the panoramic elevator sits 71 metres above the Alzette with a 270-degree view north over Pfaffenthal, Kirchberg, and the modern towers of the European Quarter. Best in autumn when the valley colours turn. The lift runs until 01:00 on weekends, so you can stay for blue hour. Free.

Fort Thüngen ramparts

Behind Mudam on Kirchberg, the restored Fort Thüngen bastion faces west toward the old town. The three-towered fort silhouette against the fortress cliffs is Luxembourg's most under-photographed angle. Free access dawn to dusk. Combine with Mudam's Wednesday free evening (18:00-21:00) for a museum-and-sunset combo.

Two more picks

Place de la Constitution has the Gëlle Fra golden lady monument silhouetted against the Pétrusse valley with the Adolphe bridge — good for winter sunsets when the sun drops early. For a spot locals actually use, walk to Passerelle bridge itself and lean on the railing halfway across — the light hits both plateaus simultaneously. For dinner-timed sunsets, book a terrace table at Restaurant Mansfeld in the Grund and watch the cliffs glow through the meal.
