The postcard base
Vianden is a small town in the north-east built along the Our river, dominated by its restored medieval castle on the hill above. Hotels line Grand-Rue and Rue Victor Hugo, mostly small family-run properties: Hotel Heintz, Auberge Aal Veinen, Hotel Oranienburg and similar. Rooms run $80-140 including breakfast, materially cheaper than the capital.
There is a chairlift from the riverside up to a viewpoint over the castle, and the Victor Hugo house museum sits on the river. Buses 570 and others connect to Ettelbruck in 30 minutes for onward rail travel.
Who should book here
Vianden suits leisure travellers who want a two or three-night castle-and-hiking base, couples on romantic breaks, and photographers chasing the classic castle-above-the-river shot at sunrise or sunset when the day-tripper coaches have gone. Hiking trails around the Our valley start from the town.
It does not suit anyone needing city amenities or nightlife. Vianden goes quiet by 10pm and options are limited outside the tourist season, roughly April to October. Also skip in deep winter when some hotels close.

Is the castle worth staying overnight for?+
Yes if you want it to yourself. Coaches arrive around 11am and leave by 5pm; before and after, the town and viewpoints are almost empty. That's the real payoff of staying.
How do I get to Vianden without a car?+
Train to Ettelbruck (30-35 minutes from Luxembourg City), then bus 570 to Vianden (30 minutes). Total travel about 90 minutes, all free.
