The reinvention
Hollerich runs west from Central Station along Route d’Esch and Rue de Hollerich. Historically industrial and railway-worker housing, it has picked up bars, coworking spaces, the Rotondes cultural venue, and one of the better restaurant clusters in the city around Rue de Hollerich. Hotels are practical rather than pretty: Hotel Ibis, Park Inn, and a few smaller places. Rooms $90-140.
The tram passes along Boulevard de Merl to the north edge; most of Hollerich itself relies on frequent buses to Hamilius or a 20-minute walk to Ville Haute via the station.
Who benefits
Hollerich suits budget travellers who want an actual scene at their door. The Rotondes hosts concerts, weekend markets and a good cafe; nearby streets have wine bars and independent restaurants that undercut Ville Haute by a third. It also suits travellers arriving by rail, since the station is 5-8 minutes on foot.
It does not suit first-time sightseers on a two-night trip. You are not walking home from the Palace in five minutes here. And the blocks nearest the tracks and Rue de Strasbourg have the same station-fringe issues as Gare after dark.

Two former railway roundhouses converted into a cultural venue: concerts, a good cafe with a terrace, weekend food markets, and family programming. Free to wander, worth an evening.
How safe is Hollerich?+
Fine on the main streets. Avoid the blocks between the station and Rue de Hollerich after midnight, same advice as Gare. The Rotondes end is completely safe.
