Gare is the quarter directly around Luxembourg Central Station, running north along Avenue de la Liberte toward the Adolphe Bridge and Ville Haute. It has the highest hotel density in the country. Three-star rooms start around $90-110, four-star around $130-170, roughly $40-60 below equivalent Ville Haute properties. The tram runs straight through it for free, so you reach the old town in 6 minutes and Kirchberg in 15.
Practical picks include the Alvisse Parc branch, Hotel Empire, Hotel International, and Park Inn by Radisson. Nothing charming, everything functional.
The trade-off nobody mentions upfront
The blocks immediately behind the station, particularly around Rue de Strasbourg and Rue Joseph Junck, are the seediest part of central Luxembourg. Expect visible drug use and street drinking on some corners after dark. It is not dangerous in a mugging sense but it is unpleasant, and reviews of station-adjacent hotels reliably mention it.
Book on Avenue de la Liberte, Rue de Bonnevoie or the Place de Paris side and you avoid it entirely. Gare suits rail arrivals, airport bus users, and budget travellers; it does not suit those who came for postcard Luxembourg.

How do I get from Central Station to the old town?+
The tram from the station stop to Hamilius is free and takes 6 minutes. Buses 9 and 16 also run it. Walking uphill takes about 20 minutes.
