The second city argument
Esch-sur-Alzette is Luxembourg's second largest town, in the former steel belt near the French border, and was European Capital of Culture in 2022. It has a pedestrianised centre along Rue de l’Alzette, the Belval campus with the University and its blast furnace conversion, and honest working-class dining. Hotel rooms run $80-130 for three-star and $130-170 for four-star, notably below capital prices.
Trains from Esch to Luxembourg Central Station run every 15 minutes and take 20-25 minutes. All public transport in Luxembourg is free.
Who this works for
Esch suits budget travellers who want a base for the whole country, not just the capital. Trains to Luxembourg city are frequent, and Esch itself is close to French Lorraine (Metz is 40 minutes) and the Mullerthal via a change. It also suits industrial-heritage travellers keen on Belval and the Fonds-de-Gras open-air museum.
It does not suit first-time visitors focused only on Luxembourg City sights. The daily commute in adds an hour of travel and Esch does not have the postcard old-town look. Skip it for two-night city trips.

Yes if you like industrial architecture. The preserved blast furnaces are integrated into the university campus and free to walk around; the Massenoire building hosts exhibitions.
How late do trains run from Luxembourg to Esch?+
