The base for the Mullerthal
Echternach is Luxembourg's oldest town, founded around a Benedictine abbey by Saint Willibrord in the 7th century, on the German border along the Sure river. Its centre is the abbey basilica, the Denzelt town hall and the market square, all walkable. Hotels line Rue de la Gare, Rue de la Sure and around Place du Marche; rooms $85-140 including breakfast at most.
The Mullerthal Trail's most famous stretches, the sandstone canyons and formations of Little Switzerland, start within a 20-minute walk. Berdorf and Beaufort are short bus rides.
Who should book Echternach
Echternach suits hikers above all. The three loops of the Mullerthal Trail total around 112km and Echternach is the most practical base for the toughest and most scenic sections. It also suits cultural visitors for the Willibrord basilica, the Roman villa museum and the Dancing Procession on Whit Tuesday.
It does not suit anyone without walking legs or hiking intent. The town itself is small; without the trails, a full day is enough. Also skip mid-winter when many trail sections are muddy and hotels quieter.

How do I get to Echternach from Luxembourg City?+
Bus 110 direct from Luxembourg Central Station takes about 50 minutes and runs frequently. There is no train line to Echternach.
