Getting down there

The Pfaffenthal panoramic elevator is free and runs from the Ville Haute plateau straight into the valley in 30 seconds — daily 5:45am to 1am. You can also walk down the Corniche path (10 minutes, some stairs). Once you’re in Grund, everything is along the Alzette river and one main street, Rue Saint-Ulric.

What to do

Scott's pub is the local institution — riverside terrace, decent food, and Sunday roast for $28. Café des Artistes does live piano Wednesday to Saturday from 9pm. Mosconi (two Michelin stars) is here if you want to blow $180 a head. The Neumünster Abbey cultural centre runs free concerts most weekends. Walk the river path towards Clausen — 20 minutes of near-total quiet in the middle of a capital city.

Good to know

Can I stay in Grund?+

Barely — there are maybe 15 hotel rooms in the whole neighbourhood. Most people stay in Ville Haute above and walk or take the elevator down.

Is it safe at night?+

Very. It gets quiet after midnight but not sketchy. The main risk is the walk back up if you miss the last elevator at 1am.
