How the free system works
There's genuinely no ticket to buy. Trams (T1 runs from Findel airport through Kirchberg to central station), buses, and 2nd-class trains anywhere in the country are all free with no registration. First-class train seats still cost money ($5 per journey typically). Frequency is high — trams every 6-8 minutes, city buses every 10-15, intercity trains every 30-60 minutes.
What to actually use
For the city itself, the tram plus walking covers everything you need. For day trips: train to Ettelbruck then bus to Vianden (90 minutes total), train to Wasserbillig for the Moselle wine route, or bus 505 to Echternach for Mullerthal hiking. Download the 'mobilitéit.lu' app for live schedules. Skip taxis unless it's after 1am — a city taxi runs $18-$25 minimum.

Are trains genuinely free without booking?+
Yes, 2nd class, everywhere in the country, no reservation needed. Just walk on. This includes trains from the airport region and to the French/German/Belgian borders (up to the border only).
Is Uber available?+
No — Uber doesn’t operate in Luxembourg. Local taxi apps like Webtaxi work but are pricey. Free public transport genuinely covers 95% of what visitors need.
