Hiking Mullerthal from Echternach: day trip guide

Luxembourg's 'Little Switzerland' has 112km of trails — here's how to pick one and get there without a car.

Getting there

Free bus 110 from Luxembourg central station to Echternach, 60 minutes. Echternach is a proper little town with a UNESCO-listed abbey, a Roman villa dig, and the country's biggest lake for summer swimming. From here, the Mullerthal Trail's Route 2 loops through the best sandstone rock formations — Wolfsschlucht, Perekop, Hohllay — in about 15km.

Which trail

If 15km is too much, do the marked B1 loop from Echternach to Wolfsschlucht and back (8km, 3 hours, easy scrambling). Signage is excellent — brown 'M' markers. Bring proper shoes; sandstone gets slick after rain. Lunch back in Echternach at Restaurant Le Postillon (goulash + beer around $22). The last free bus back to the capital leaves around 8pm — check the exact time on mobilitéit.lu.

Good to know

Can I do Mullerthal without hiking gear?+

The main viewpoints (Schiessentümpel waterfall, Predigtstuhl) are reachable on easy 30-60 minute walks from marked parking areas. But the good stuff needs proper shoes.

Is Echternach worth an overnight?+

Yes if you want to hike two days — Hotel Le Postillon or Youth Hostel Echternach both work. Otherwise the town is a comfortable day trip.
