The top three
1. Vianden. The country's showpiece — an extensively restored medieval castle on a ridge above the Our valley, with proper furnished interiors, weaponry, and staggering views. Chairlift up, walk down. Allow 2-3 hours plus travel. 2. Bourscheid. A ruined hilltop fortress with the biggest views in the Ardennes; less restored than Vianden, more atmospheric, quieter. Bring a picnic. 3. Beaufort. Two castles side by side — a medieval ruin and a Renaissance château with furnished rooms; the Renaissance building includes a still-operating black-currant liqueur (Cassero) tasting.
Vianden is a must if you only see one castle. Bourscheid is the pick if you’ve been to Vianden already or want fewer crowds — the views over the Sûre valley are the point. Beaufort is the most varied single visit because you get two very different periods on one ticket. All three are in the north of the country and pair with each other on a driving day. By train and bus, Vianden is the most straightforward: CFL to Ettelbruck, then bus 570.
Two more for enthusiasts
4. Clervaux. A restored white castle in a deep valley in the Ardennes north, home to the UNESCO-listed Steichen "Family of Man" photography exhibition. The castle itself is modest; the exhibit is the reason to come. 5. Larochette. A ruined double castle above a small village in the Mullerthal foothills; free to walk around the exterior, small entry fee inside. A pleasant hour, not a destination.
Clervaux is on this list because of Steichen — as a castle it's the least interesting of the five, but as a museum visit it's world-class. Larochette is what to see if you’re already driving through the Mullerthal to Beaufort or Echternach. I’d skip the castles at Wiltz and Useldange unless you’re doing a comprehensive tour — they’re fine but add nothing you won’t have seen better at the top three.

Can I see two castles in one day?+
By car, yes — Vianden and Bourscheid are 30 minutes apart, and Beaufort pairs with either. By public transport, one castle per day is realistic.
Which is best for kids?+
Vianden. The restored rooms, armour, and chairlift ride hold attention where a ruined shell might not.
