24 hours in Luxembourg City: an honest itinerary

One full day covers 90% of what matters — here's the walk I’d give a friend on a first visit.

Morning to afternoon

8:30am coffee and croissant at Oberweis on Grand-Rue ($8). 9am walk to the Bock casemates ($8, 90 minutes). 11am cross to Place de la Constitution for the Corniche path — Europe's most beautiful balcony — down towards Pfaffenthal. Take the free elevator or walk. Lunch in Grund at Scott's ($20 for fish and chips + a beer). 2pm walk along the Alzette to Clausen or back up to Ville Haute.

Afternoon to night

3pm tram (free) to Kirchberg for MUDAM ($8, 90 minutes). 5pm tram back and stop at Place Guillaume for a beer at Brasserie Guillaume terrace ($7). 7pm dinner at Um Dierfgen for judd mat gaardebounen and a Luxembourgish beer ($30 all in). 9pm walk to Place de la Constitution for the illuminated valley view. Late drink at Konrad, or Sinner cocktail bar if you want serious drinks ($14).

Good to know

Can I do this in the rain?+

Yes — swap MUDAM for the National Museum of History and Art (Fischmaart, $7), and stick to the covered arcades in Ville Haute. The casemates are largely underground anyway.

Where should I base myself for one night?+

Ville Haute — Hotel Simoncini or Vauban put you 5 minutes from everything on the itinerary above.
